Silent Spring Institute was founded in 1994 by women in the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition as a non-profit research organization dedicated to studying the environment and women's health. With funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Institute in 1994 launched the Cape Cod Breast Cancer and the Environment Study; phase two began in 1998. Studies by the Institute have pointed to the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds in Cape Cod drinking water and in personal care products, and the organization has promulgated its findings through its newsletter, website, and in publications such as Environmental Health Perspectives.
