The Harvard University Archives is the oldest and one of the largest institutional academic archives in the nation.

The Harvard University Archives collects, organizes, preserves and provides access to a comprehensive record of more than 375 years of life at Harvard. From 17th and 18th century diaries and scientific observations to 21st century web sites, the Harvard University Archives’ collections comprise over 51,000 feet and 9 terabytes of University records and related historical materials.

This activity is tied integrally to records management services for Harvard University staff, administrators and faculty. Records management staff provide guidance and resources for all stages in the records and information lifecycle, from creating records through destruction of non-permanent records or transfer of permanent records to the Harvard University Archives.

Title: Harvard Iranian Oral History Project

Description: The Iranian Oral History Project was launched at Harvard's Center for Middle Eastern Studies in the fall of 1981. The project provides scholars studying the contemporary political history of Iran with primary source material consisting of personal accounts of individuals who either played major roles in important political events and decisions from the 1920s to the 1970s or witnessed these events from close range. The Iranian Oral History Project TED database provided a means to discover this source material. However, none of the data could be captured here. Title: The Poet's Voice : A Digital Poetry Collection

Description: The Woodberry Poetry Room, named in honor of Harvard alumnus and Professor George E. Woodberry (A.B., 1877), opened in 1931 for the purpose of bringing alive the poet's voice and creating a place at Harvard for the enduring delight and significance of poetry. The Poetry Room's archive of recorded poetry is widely acknowledged to be the largest in the world. Among its holdings are over 6,000 audio recordings from many sources in numerous formats. Approximately 3,300 of these are magnetic tape reels containing recordings specifically made by or for the Poetry Room at Harvard; some are original master recordings, and some are taped copies of material whose originals, in a variety of formats, have become damaged, fragile, or lost. From this group of 3,300 reels of tape a select number of recordings have been digitized and made accessible to the Harvard community and, when copyright restrictions permit, the general public. Title: Harvard Fine Arts Library Chinese Rubbings Collection

Description: The Harvard Fine Arts Library currently houses 2,602 individual East Asian rubbings, the majority of which are from China. The rubbings were made from ancient stone stelae, tomb tablets, Buddhist and Daoist scriptures on stelae and rocks, as well as inscriptions and designs copied from bronze vessels, jade objects, ceramics, tomb bricks, and roof tiles, objects dating from the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE) to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE). A project to catalog and digitize the entire collection was completed in July 2007. All 1945 Chinese rubbing records and images have been added to Harvard's VIA image catalog and are findable through this website. Title: Studies in Scarlet : Marriage and Sexuality in the U.S. and U.K., 1815-1914

Description: Studies in Scarlet presents the images of over 420 separately published trial narratives from the Harvard Law School Library's extensive trial collections. Included are a number of trials of the wealthy and renowned such as an account of the adultery trial of Caroline, Queen Consort of George IV, the sodomy trial of Oscar Wilde, and the trial of Harry Thaw for the murder of Stanford White, the famous architect who was Evelyn Nesbit Thaw's lover. The larger part of the collection, however, consists of the stories of ordinary men and women thrust into the public eye when their marriages and love affairs went wrong or their relationships did not conform to social standards. Title: Loeb Music Library Digital Scores and Libretti

Description: The scores and libretti in the Loeb Music Library Digital Scores and Libretti Virtual Collection include first and early editions and manuscript copies of music from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by J.S. Bach and Bach family members, Mozart, Schubert and other composers, as well as multiple versions of nineteenth century opera scores, seminal works of musical modernism, and music of the Second Viennese School. Many, such as variant editions of nineteenth century operas and related libretti, fall into intellectually related sets that are meant to be seen and used together. As a group, they give scholars a window into the study of historical performance practice that cannot be duplicated using the holdings of any one other library. Title: Artemas Ward House and Its Collections

Description: The General Artemas Ward House in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts was the home of General Artemas Ward, first commander-in-chief of the patriot forces, and was occupied by his descendants until 1909. It was opened to the public by one of Ward's descendants, also Artemas Ward, from 1909 to 1925 when it was given to Harvard University. Harvard currently operates the house as a historic house museum. The Artemas Ward House and Its Collections Virtual Collection provides online access to over 6,000 images of the house, furnishings, manuscripts, photographs and related published sources, providing the opportunity to study an important figure of the American Revolution, a nineteenth-century farm family, and a twentieth-century museum. Description: The public interface for Harvard's Web Archive Collection Service (WAX) launched on February 4, 2009. WAX began as a pilot project in July 2006, funded by the University's Library Digital Initiative (LDI) to address the management of web sites by collection managers for long-term archiving. It was the first LDI project specifically oriented toward preserving "born-digital" material. The WAX pilot was a collaboration of the University Library's Office for Information Systems with three University partners, each fielding a single project: the Harvard University Archives (Harvard University Library); the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America (Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study); and the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, with sponsorship from Harvard College Library). The WAX system was decommissioned at the end of 2017; access to its web archives is now through the Archive-It web archiving service. Title: Richard Wilson

Description: British-American physicist Richard Wilson (April 29, 1926-May 19, 2018) was Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics at Harvard. He joined Harvard University in 1961 as a physics professor and spent the next thirty years at Harvard focusing on nuclear and elementary particle physics. At Harvard he was a supporter of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator and the use of the Harvard Cyclotron for proton therapy for the treatment of cancer. Professor Wilson's website provides biographical information and information on science and the law, appearances at public hearings, publications, lectures, and the history of the Harvard University Cyclotrons. The site also includes his c.v. and personal photos. Collected by the Harvard University Archives as part of the personal archive of Richard Wilson.
