The Harvard University Archives is the oldest and one of the largest institutional academic archives in the nation.

The Harvard University Archives collects, organizes, preserves and provides access to a comprehensive record of more than 375 years of life at Harvard. From 17th and 18th century diaries and scientific observations to 21st century web sites, the Harvard University Archives’ collections comprise over 51,000 feet and 9 terabytes of University records and related historical materials.

This activity is tied integrally to records management services for Harvard University staff, administrators and faculty. Records management staff provide guidance and resources for all stages in the records and information lifecycle, from creating records through destruction of non-permanent records or transfer of permanent records to the Harvard University Archives.

Description: Ezra Vogel (1930-2020) was an American sociologist whose research focused on modern Japan, China, and Korea. Vogel received his Harvard PhD in 1958 and taught at Yale before returning to Harvard in 1964; he retired from teaching in 2000 as Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences. Vogel served in many administrative roles at the University, including founding director of the Asia Center (1997-1999) and director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies (1973-1975 and 1995-1999). Description: Occupy Harvard is a student movement established in the fall of 2011 when Harvard students created an encampment by erecting thirty tents in Harvard Yard. The inception of Occupy Harvard was marked by a rally, General Assembly, and march that were attended by approximately 800 Harvard students, faculty, and staff on November 9. This Occupy Harvard website, the second of two primary websites for the movement, was created November 11, 2011. It became the primary web presence of the Occupy Harvard movement. Harvests were taken at varying intervals (monthly, weekly, or daily). These harvests are very rich in content, including news, recordings and photographs of events, policy statements, links to allied organizations, and instructions on how to become involved in the movement. In late 2012, the original site briefly ceased to exist and was re-introduced with new content. The first harvest with the new content is from February 2013. Description: John Langdon Sibley, A.B. 1825, Grad. Div. S. 1828, served as Harvard's Assistant Librarian from 1825-1826 and 1841-1856, Librarian from 1856-1877, and Librarian, Emeritus from 1877-1885. A noted biographer, he is best known for his Biographical Sketches of Graduates of Harvard University. Sibley was born in Union, Maine on December 29, 1804, and died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on December 9, 1885. Sibley's personal diary spans nearly 37 years, with entries beginning on January 1, 1846 and ending on August 29, 1882. In it he recorded the details of daily life, often commenting on local and national current events, as well as Harvard affairs. Description: Dorothy Shore Zinberg (1917 -2020) was an American sociologist and biochemist. A founding member of the Kennedy School’s Center for Science and International Affairs (re-endowed in 1997 as the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs), Dorothy first came to Harvard as a research assistant and then a graduate student in biochemistry in the early 1950s. She received her PhD in the social science of medicine at Harvard in 1966 and taught in Harvard’s sociology department before becoming a lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School. Dorothy Ginsberg's website provides biographical information, editorials and blog posts written by Dr. Ginsberg, video of her speaking, and her bibliography.
