The Society of Women Engineers was founded in 1950 following several years of informal meetings in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to inform the public of the availability of qualified women engineers, to foster a favorable attitude in industry towards them, and to contribute to their professional advancement. In 1951 the SWE published the first issue of the Journal of the Society of Women Engineers. In time the SWE came to serve as an informational center on women in engineering, conducting surveys, offering career guidance, and administering scholarship programs. The Boston Section was one of the earliest active sections; it published its own newsletter, beginning in the early 1970s.
